Yo Quiero USDA! Food Stamp Soap Operas Produced In Spanish July 12, 2012
Do you think that there are too few people on government assistance?
Do you think that our welfare state isn't big enough?
Do you think that 1 in 7 Americans on food stamps is simply not enough?
If so, then congratulations! The government bureaucracy that administers the food stamp program agrees with you!
And, to that end, that same bureaucracy has produced audio soap operas ("novelas") to tell people who can't speak English the awesome tale of getting goodies from Uncle Sam.
Each soap opera is basically a dramatic tale about a food stamp evangelist encouraging a food stamp skeptic to consider becoming dependent on government rather than establishing a responsible work ethic.
And then a narrator at the end of the episode will encourage listeners to tune in to see if the skeptic ends up becoming part of the welfare state. (Cue organ music).
Apparently the money for this nonsense has already been allocated. "Congress allocates funds to USDA with the mandate to conduct public education about the benefits of SNAP and how to apply to help reduce hunger in America," Amanda D. Browne, a USDA spokeswoman explained.
In other words: This is just another stupid way in which the government wastes your tax dollars.
