Democrats are twice as likely to support Mayor Bloomberg's Big Gulp soda ban.

This should come as a surprise to no one. Dems love the Nanny State concept, as they are convinced that bureaucrats are much better at making the best decisions about your life than you are.

As far as we can tell, there are only two major issues where Democrats are perceived to be civil libertarians: abortion and gay marriage. Let's deal with each of these in turn.

First of all, abortion is not a simple issue of civil liberty. This is because the question about whether or not the fetus is entitled to life is exactly the debate.

It's not just about the pregnant woman and what she can/can't do with "her body". It's a controversy about the other body. It's a question about whether or not the state has an interest in protecting the unborn child - a totally separate person.

So we can safely reject abortion as a matter of civil rights, contrary to what those pigheaded boobs in Hollywood might tell you.

And that brings us to the issue of gay marriage. Here, once again, the perception is that Democrats are on the side of civil liberties.

We reject that argument because we believe that there is an insidious element behind the gay rights movement which doesn't give a flip about civil liberties.

In fact, the gay rights mafia recently got Manny Pacquaio banned from a mall because he had the audacity to speak out against gay marriage.

That's not a promotion of liberty. That's akin to McCarthy-era blackballing for people who don't promote the "correct" viewpoint.

We've already seen how the gay marriage goons got a video about gay marriage in Canada pulled from YouTube. It was later added back, but it makes clear that these people couldn't care less about the free exchange of opposing ideas.

And across the pond we see where our country is headed. In the UK, Catholic schools have been officially warned that they could be breaking the law by encouraging pupils to oppose gay marriage. Read that again: Catholic schools.

Religious freedom? Gay rights activists don't think you deserve it.

And, by extension, Democrats don't think you deserve it, either. Since they side with those politically-active gays as a matter of principle.

And that's why they're more likely to be statists.
