'Pro-Choice' Americans At Record Low 41% May 23, 2012
|
Probably the best news of the day.
Gallup says that the percentage of Americans who identify themselves as "pro-choice" is down 6 points from last July to 41%.
The percentage of Americans who identify themselves as "pro-life" is at 50%. Take a look at the chart below. It looks as though the "pro-choice" element is trending down since 2006, while the "pro-life" element has trended up since that time.
We're old enough to remember waaaaaaaaay back in the early 90s when pro-choice Republicans were saying that the party should change its platform to remove the pro-life language.
Some pro-choice Republicans, advocating for that, even put ads on billboards which read "80% Can't Be Wrong!".
The idea being, of course, that 80% of Americans supported abortion rights, so the Republicans should adopt a pro-choice position because it would have mass appeal.
Thankfully, their efforts failed.
And we doubt it was ever as high as 80%.
But now popular opinion has tilted in favor of the pro-life position.
Thank God.
