Left-Wing 'Nation' Editor Has A New Agenda: 'Free Pussy Riot' May 2, 2012
We have to thank Katrina vanden Heuvel for bringing this to our attention on an otherwise slow news day.
Although we must confess: We thought that 'Pussy Riot' was simply a nickname for a party at the Playboy Mansion.
It turns out it's much more important than that. It's a female punk rock band in Russia.
Ms. vanden Heuvel fills us in with more: "While you might not have heard much, if anything, about Pussy Riot in this country..."
Yeah. We can't imagine why we haven't heard about an all-female punk rock band from Russia in this country. Maybe it's because they're just not quite as popular as Taylor Swift. Not yet, anyway.
But the outrage is this: The punk rock band performed an arguably blasphemous performance — complete with ski masks, genuflecting, kicks, and jabs — right in front of Christ the Savior Church in Moscow.
Oh, yeah. The whole point of that insipid demonstration was to protest Putin.
Ms. vanden Heuvel: "[I]t probably wasn't the most tactful way to attract a broad spectrum of supporters to the opposition's views."
Really?
We'll lay odds that having a name like "Pussy Riot" probably didn't help much, either.
Anyway, thanks to that "performance", three of the band's members have since been detained. They can go to prison for as much as seven years.
They've been charged with "hooliganism". This is important because it represents the first time in history that anything like "hooliganism" has ever been associated a punk rock band.
Their music sucks, by the way.
And now Ms. vanden Heuvel wants Pussy Riot's three band members released from jail.
While we applaud her effort, we have to ask: Was she as concerned about Russian people who were oppressed under Soviet totalitarianism just a few decades ago?
Probably not. It was for the "greater good" back then.
