In Praise Of The Do-Nothing Congress May 2, 2012
Over at The Washington Post, Dana Milbank doesn't seem to be happy that the current Congress isn't passing many laws.
"To call this 112th Congress a do-nothing Congress would be an insult — to the real Do-Nothing Congress of 1947-48. That Congress passed 908 laws. To date, this one has passed 106 public laws. Even if they triple that output in the rest of 2012 — not a terribly likely proposition — they will still be in last place going back at least 40 years."
Hey, can we get an "Amen"?
To be perfectly honest, we're quite happy that the current Congress isn't passing $1 trillion stimulus bills that no one has even read.
We're also happy that they're not trying to sabotage our great healthcare system with unconstitutional legislation.
And about that Orwellian-named "Employee Free Choice Act": Forget it. The union goons won't get a chance to intimidate people into "voting right".
But, hey, this Congress will vote on "The Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act". So the laws that don't screw with our liberty are given priority.
And we're just cool with that. Even though Mark Twain used the n-word in Huckleberry Finn.
And we also like the fact the Congress will consider "The World War II Memorial Prayer Act". Because that one will drive the "separation of church and state" extremists particularly crazy.
But it won't be a massive new entitlement program which wastes trillions of American dollars.
Oh, by the way. Let's not forget what George Will used to say. The Bill of Rights begins with the 5 most beautiful words in the English language: "Congress shall make no law".
So that small-l libertarian streak in us encourages the current Congress to keep doing a whole lot of nothing.
By doing nothing, they're extending the life of the republic.
