New Argument Against Voter ID Laws: They Discriminate Against Transgendered People April 16, 2012
Well this should motivate just about every dyed-in-the-wool Republican to re-evaluate his position on Voter ID Laws.
The Nation calls it an "obscene paradox" that people who are transgendered may have problems voting because of "strict photo voter ID laws."
The article cites a UCLA study entitled "The Potential Impact of Voter Identification Laws on Transgender Voters." Yes, there actually is such a study.
Brentin Mock, the author of the Nation article makes the following observation: "Discussions on both sides of voter ID laws tend to leave out transgender citizens in discussions about who would be most adversely impacted."
This is terribly surprising, because I'm sure that most Americans woke up this morning and asked themselves, "Hey, how does that proposed Voter ID law affect people who have had a sex change?"
While lamenting the plight of the trannys, Mock writes: "Registering to drive and vote are supposed to be proud moments, but for too many transgender people, it's something to suffer through." Alas, the struggles that these neutered martyrs must face in Western Civilization.
Another complaint from Mock: Transgendered people have problems changing the gender marker on their government-issued IDs. This is extremely important, because the first thing that most pollworkers will check is not the photo on the ID, but the gender marker. Our great republic can certainly not abide people voting under an incorrect gender.
Mock further makes his case by stating that transgendered people in some states may need to get gender reassignment surgery - a $40,000 to $50,000 expense probably not covered by insurance - before they can update their state-issued IDs.
But let's not kid ourselves: Are you really transgendered if you haven't had the surgery?
I say: Bite the bullet. Losing your right to vote is a small price to pay for wishing away your penis.
